Fire
Public Meetings and Demonstrations
Summerside's fire department provides a variety of protective and public safety activities including:
-
making recommendations for programs and policies for fire prevention, safety, and inspection.
-
making recommendations for the aquisition of fire fighting equipment, facilities, and resources.
-
making recommendations regarding the operation of the Fire Department.
-
Carrying out the requirements of the Fire Prevention bylaw.
Summerside has two fire stations, one is located in downtown (the Summerside station), the other in the west end of the city (the St. Eleanors station).
The Summerside station provides fire coverage for Wilmot, Sherbrooke and the area previously known as the 'Town of Summerside'. The St. Eleanors station provides fire coverage for Linkletter, St. Eleanors, and Slemon Park.
Safety Tips.
A fire escape plan is essential whether you are in the home, school or public place. Your escape plan should include an exit from each room. Exits must be clear and accessible, always have a second exit, in case the first one cannot be used. The plan must also include an outdoor meeting place (lamp post, tree, or neighbor's house). Hold fire drills with the whole family at least twice a year and use a smoke detector so that everyone gets accustomed to the sound it makes.
Smoke detectors should be placed near bedrooms and on each floor of the house including the ground floor and the basement. There are battery operated and plug-in electric detectors. Battery powered are the most popular. Make sure you change the battery regularly.
In the Kitchen
Children can hurt or burn themselves so to prevent this:
-
Never leave children unattended
-
On the stove, turn handles of pots and pans in so that children cannot reach them
-
Install a fire extinguisher near possible sources of fire.
-
Keep matches and lighters out of children's reach
-
Have children practice "Stop! Drop! And Roll!" until they are able to do it well.
Knowing how to react if your clothes catch on fire is very important. Nothing beats practicing stop, drop and roll.
In case of burns, run cold water over the affected area. Tell children they must always tell and adult when the hurt themselves.
In case of fire, warn occupants and evacuate the building immediately. If a door is closed, touch it first. If it feels hot, don't open it, use another exit in the escape plan. Close doors behind you to keep the flames from spreading. Since smoke is toxic, avoid breathing it. Crawl to get out of a smoke-filled room.
If you live in an area serviced by 911 teach your children their address and phone number.
